Shehata Names Preliminary Squad
December 23, 2009
Egypt coach Hassan Shehata has named his provisional squad of 32 players for the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Angola from January 10.
The defending champions, who have won the last two editions of the continental showpiece, have been drawn in Group C along with Nigeria, Mozambique and Benin, and will open their campaign with a January 12 meeting with the Super Eagles in Benguela.
One surprising name on the list of players announced by Shehata in a press conference in Cairo on Tuesday, is that of talismanic playmaker Mohamed Aboutrika, who has been battling with injury of late and was said to be out of the competition.
But Shehata insists that the Al Ahly man, as well as experienced striker Mido, will have fitness tests on Saturday to determine their availability for the tournament.
But three other big-name stars have not been included for Egypt due to injury, namely striker Amr Zaki, and midfielders Mohamed Barakat and Mohamed Shawky.
Receiving a first call-up is Al Ahly goalkeeper Ahmed Adel, who has been in tremendous form of late.
The squad will be trimmed to the required 23 players ahead of the December 31 deadline.
