Mounir El Hamdaoui missed a penalty as Morocco, who have qualified for four previous World Cup finals, gained only their second point in Group A in 0-0 tie with Togo in Rabat on Saturday.
It is another major setback for Roger Lemerre’s side, who lost their opening match in the group at home to Gabon.
“It’s a result we deeply regret because the players have been preparing since May 28 and worked hard to try and get the best result.
Morocco had looked to be forcing a revival after drawing 0-0 away in Cameroon at the start of June but Saturday’s result leaves them with just two points out of possible nine.
Togo moved up into second place in the standings with four points, behind Gabon who have six and a game in hand.
Youssouf Hadji had an early chance to give Morocco the lead when one on-one with the Togo goalkeeper Dodji Akanava but missed.
The penalty was awarded when Abdou Gafar Mamah brought down Hadji after 31 minutes but El Hamdaoui, leading scorer in the Dutch league this past season, hit the woodwork.
