Ghana 2008 - Team Profile - Morocco
Morocco will go into their fifth successive MTN Africa Cup of Nations final tournament with great expectations, seeking to add to the only previous triumph they had in the tournament more than 30 years ago now. The Atlas Lions will have a polished side, who had little difficulty in qualifying for the tournament, at their disposal and have re-appointed the veteran French coach Henri Michel to head their campaign. Michel, who was Morocco’s coach at the 2000 and 2002 finals, comes in for Mohamed Fakhir, surprisingly relieved of his job after Morocco’s had won their qualifying group with an unbeaten record. As former World Cup finalists, Morocco have been regular challengers for the continental title and were runners-up in the 2004 edition when they lost to hosts Tunisia in the final. But in three of their last four MTN Africa Cup of Nations finals appearances, they have failed to make it past the first round, including the last tournament in Egypt. They will be expected to turn that form around in the 2008 finals. Morocco will have their hopes led by two of African football’s brightest and exciting young talents. Mbark Boussoufa and Maraoune Chamakh, were both born to migrant families in Europe but have thrown in their allegiance with their Moroccan roots. Morocco are no drawing re of their talent from the Diaspora that sees large communities in Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Scandinavia.
