Ghana 2008 - Team Profile - Egypt
|
Defending champions Egypt have been a perennial factor at the MTN African Cup of Nations finals and go to Ghana to compete in a record breaking 22nd final tournament. That they have won five of the previous 21 tournaments is arguably indicative more of a failure to totally dominate than it is of an overriding influence on the African game. Egypt, despite continual attendance at finals starching back to 1982, have only won the Nations Cup crown periodically. Their last success came in the last edition on home soil but it was a miraculous run at the title for a side who, at the start of the event, had even been written off by their own fans. Egypt gained momentum as they went through the tournament but had generous refereeing decisions to thank for their semifinal win over Senegal and in the final had to settle for post match penalties to get past Cote d’Ivoire. A stuttering qualifying campaign ahead of the 2008 MTN Africa Cup of Nations finals could hint at potential trouble ahead but the Pharaohs can never be written off and will be well respected by their opponents. Coach Hassan Shehata, whose own future was in a perilous place before the last finals, still has to call upon an ageing nucleus as the backbone of his selection, although he has been trying out several younger players in recent matches. Captain Ahmed Hassan will attempt to add to two previous winners medal in 1998 and 2006. He is backed up by the experience of goalkeeper Essam Al Hadari, midfielder Mohamed Shawky and Mohamed Barakat and Mohamed Aboutrika upfront.
