The battle cry from Nigeria’s Flying Eagles is that France will not stand in their way to becoming world champions at U20 level in Colombia.
The Nigerian U20s face off with the European champions Sunday in football-mad Cali for a place in the last four of the tournament.
“I believe that with our determination we will beat France to qualify for the semi-finals,” defender Kenneth Omeruo told MTNFootball.com
“France have some good individual players who feature for some top clubs in France and beyond. We will be very fit and give 110% to beat them,” further said Chimezie Mbah.
“We want to carry the World Cup so we have no choice but to beat them to move to the next stage of our quest,” added striker Uche Nwofor, who has netted two goals thus far at Colombia 2011.
The team have been promised enhanced win bonus for this game and beyond and there are promises from sponsors to weigh in with more incentives as well.
Goalkeeper Gideon Gambo has had part of his wish come true after Portugal sent Argentina packing because he wants a rematch with the Portuguese.
“It was great to watch Portugal beat Argentina on penalties because they are one team I want us to meet again after they beat us in Panama City before the World Cup,” offered the Sharks shot stopper.
Coach John Obuh was equally oozing with confidence at Saturday’s press conference at the Estadio Olimpico Pascual Guerrero.
Asked who are the now his favourites to be world champions, Obuh simply replied, “Nigeria’s Flying Eagles.”
Midfielder Philemon Daniel said the team have formed a winning habit beginning with winning the African Youth Championship and what now remains for them is to conquer the world.
There are unconfirmed reports that the best known France star Gael Kakuta will miss this first-ever clash between the two countries due to injury.
Kakuta is with top English club Chelsea but last season was shipped out on loan to another London club Fulham to gain more experience.
One player the Flying Eagles are unanimous must be carefully watched by the defence on Sunday is no.10 shirted Gilles Sunu, who has so far fired home two goals in this competition.
Flying Eagles officials have kept away the video of the Round of 16 match between France and Ecuador because after fully studying the tape, they concluded that France were just lucky to beat the South Americans by “an offside goal”.
“We don’t want the boys to suffer from complacency and that is why only the coaches watched the match,” a top team official revealed.
Officials said that both teams have been ordered by FIFA to check out of the Intercontinental Hotel in Cali before they depart for this early afternoon kick-off.
The semi-finalists will fly directly to Medellin, Colombia’s second biggest city, Sunday night, while the losers will check back into the Intercontinental in Cali before they head out to Bogota the following day for onward trip back home.
