Lesotho stun Burundi to advance
Lesotho have caused a surprise after they
won through to the group stages of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers at the
expense of the more fancied Burundi.
The tiny Southern African nation went into
Tuesday’s away tie 1-0 up from the first leg on Friday, and despite a 2-1 loss
in Bujumbura, advance on the away goals rule.
Bokang Mothoana gave Lesotho the lead
midway through the first half of the match on Tuesday, which left the
Burundians needing to score three times in order to advance.
Almost immediately though, Burundi pulled a
goal back through Cedric Amissi and laid siege to the Lesotho goal.
That was the way it stayed until the 88th
minute when the home side were awarded a penalty, which was duly converted by
Yamin Ndikumana.
Try as they might though, they could not
force a third goal and Lesotho were left to celebrate an excellent victory.
Lesotho will now go into Group D in the
next stage of the qualifiers along with Ghana, Zambia and Sudan.
