The star of the show for Mexico, Marquez commands huge respect from his teammates and fans alike. Able to switch between centre-back and a defensive midfield position, he is usually used in defence by Mexico coach Javier Aguirre.

After beginning his career with Atlas, he moved to Europe in 1999 and joined Monaco in France, where he spent four successful seasons before joining Spanish giants Barcelona. Crippling injuries have limited his appearances in recent years and he is now seen very much as a squad man by the Catalans.

He made his national team debut 13 years ago in 1997 but disappointingly was not chosen for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. However, he was handed the captain's armband at the tender age of 23 for the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan and also appeared at the 2006 event in Germany.

He was part of the Mexico side that won the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup.
