Africa’s pride take on the Iraq
Ghana Team Picture
The match will take place in Istanbul, with kick-off at 17h00 (CAT).
The Black Stars continued their outstanding history in the competition when they managed to progress all the way through to the semifinals before being denied a chance to defend their 2009 title by tournament favourites France.
Losing 2-1 in the semifinal on Wednesday evening, there is little to fault in the Africans display which saw them ooze a certain amount of pedigree throughout the tournament that left even the best of the crop admiring their efforts.
Undoubtedly the pride of Africa, Ghana will be out to make sure they can at least get their hands on some piece of metal which will commend them for their efforts in the tournament.
They will, however, have a tough task to face in the shape of Iraq, who have been the surprise package of the tournament so far.
Almost on the verge of causing the upset of the tournament by nearly qualifying for the final in Istanbul, Iraq were three minutes away from making history, but a late goal by Uruguay’s Gonzalo Bueno sent the game to extra time before the South Americans eventually triumphed on penalties.
It has been a remarkable road for the Iraqis, and having made their own personal history by bettering their personal best performance back in 1989 when they reached the quarterfinals of the tournament, they come into the game knowing that whatever the outcome they have done themselves proud.
