The Nigeria Football Federation have congratulated Mikel Obi for winning the UEFA Champions League with his club Chelsea.

NFF president Aminu Maigari said on Sunday that Mikel was the pride to the nation and deserved plaudits from all and sundry not only for his club’s victory, but for his personal commitment and high performance throughout a successful campaign.

Maigari said: “We are all very proud of Mikel Obi and we congratulate him for this sweet victory. More gladdening is the fact that he was not a docile member of the team or a bench-warmer. He was very active and played his part brilliantly in ensuring a magnificent triumph for Chelsea.

“The whole nation should praise the young man. He fought hard and showed dedication all through the campaign and in the process lifted our country’s name high in international football.”

He added:  “We must look at this win in its true context: Chelsea won the title right at the home ground of Bayern Munich, in front of their own fans. It is an amazing story and our own Mikel Obi was part of it.” Nigeria international Mikel played the entire 120 minutes of regulation and extra time culminating in Chelsea’s 4-3 penalty shoot-out win over Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena Saturday night to claim the prestigious Champions League for the first time.

Congrats JMO, you are a legend in the making, and the next Captain of the Super Eagles. I don't know the problem you have with Nigeria, but please find a place in your heart and forgive these heartless leaders. Sometimes, me too in my sadness do ask God why he created me a Nigerian. But who can question God. Bring your winning streak into the Super Eagles, you are a winner, and a winner you will always be. You are gradually taking over from King Kanu as the most decorated Nigeria player. To God be the Glory.
