Heartbreak for Yaya and City as Ronaldo strikes late
Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester City's Vincent Company battle for the ball
The Whites came back twice as Marcelo and Karim Benzema cancelled goals from Edin Dzeko and Aleksandar Kolarov, before Ronaldo stole the game at the death.
The Portuguese forward signaled the hosts’ intentions in the 8th minute when Ronaldo found himself one-on-one with Vincent Kompany on the left and then cut inside before shooting on target, but Joe Hart was able to turn the ball around the post.
Four minutes later Ronaldo fired another dipping shot which Gonzalo Higuain deflected towards goal with his head, but again Hart was able to keep the ball out, this time a bit fortunate as the ball came off his shoulder.
Then in the 21st minute another Ronaldo shot was deflected into the path of Sami Khedira, but the midfielder volleyed over the bar from about eight yards out.
The hosts almost took the lead five minutes before the break as Kompany failed to clear a chipped pass from Angel Di Maria, allowing Higuain to get a touch at the far post, but the ball went wide of the post to keep the scores level at half time.
After the break City continued to keep the home side at bay, with Marcelo shooting wide of the target in the 60th minute, before flashing another effort over the crossbar six minutes later.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 68th minute as Yaya Toure gained possession in his own half and carried the ball forward before releasing Dzeko on the left, who then beat Casillas with a low shot.
Four minutes later Kolarov managed to get his shot on target from the left, but this time Casillas managed to get down quickly to block the shot.
Then in the 75th minute Yaya Toure had the perfect chance to double the lead for his side as he broke through on the right, but the Ivorian fired his shot just wide of the upright.
City were made to regret that miss as Jose Mourinho’s men leveled matters a minute later when Marcelo was offered space to shoot again, only for his shot to deflect of Javi Garcia and into the back of the net.
The visitors regained their lead in the 85th minute from a freekick on the right which saw Kolarov bending the ball past Xabi Alonso and Iker Casillas with his left foot.
However, the lead lasted for just two minutes before Benzema equalised at the other end as he turned expertly before placing the ball past Hart after receiving a great pass from Angel Di Maria.
The hosts secured the maximum points in the 90th minute as Ronaldo cut in from the left before firing a right-footed shot which dipped just in front of Hart and over the line.
