Bayern break against BATE
Bayern Munich's Bastian Schweinsteiger looks dejected
The home side got off to an early start when they nearly rattled the German giants from a low shot by Edgar Olekhnovich but it was kept out by Manuel Neuer.
Toni Kroos squandered a great opportunity to break the deadlock when he rounded Andre Gorbunov in goal and only needed to place the ball in the back of the net, but his final shot struck the upright, 13minutes in.
BATE were handing Bayern some early pressure and it paid off when Aleksandr Volodko’s attempted shot fell invitingly for Aleksandr Pavlov, in the 23rd minute, who struck a low shot to give his side the lead.
Five minutes after the break Holger Badstuber was shown yellow for a later challenge, before Vitali Rodionov showed some good skills to turn away from Luiz Gustavo, on the edge of the penalty area, but his shot went high and wide just after the hour mark.
Despite being a goal behind, last season’s runners-up continued to dominate the possession in the game but it was the hosts who doubled the scoreline.
A wonderful exchange of passes between Edgar Olekhnovich and Rodionov saw the latter hold his composure to hit a left footed strike which topped the back of the top corner, 12 minutes from time.
Franck Ribery manage to pounce in extra time to make the scoreline 2-1 when he calmly lobbed the ball over the onrushing ‘keeper.
However hope of a comeback was short lived when Renan Bressan put the scorline beyond a doubt as he squared home a pass by Dmitri Mozolevski, five minutes into extra time; seeing Bayern fall to a disappointing defeat away from home.
