Real Madrid secured their place at the top of Group D when they thrashed Dinamo Zagreb 6-2 in a UEFA Champions League match at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night.

Jose Callejon and Karim Benzema scored a brace each with Gonzalo higuain and Mesut Ozil adding the other goals, while Fatos Beciraj and Ivan Tomacek scored the consolation goals for the visitors.

The home side took the lead as early as the second minute when Ozil beat defenders on the left before cutting the ball back for Benzema who had all the space in the world to pick his spot in the far corner.

The lead was doubled four minutes later when Callejon flicked the ball on for Benzema who then played the ball back for an unmarked Callejon to fire into the back of the net.

The Whites continued with their dominance as they added their third goal in the ninth minute when Higuain wrong-footed a defender on the right side of the penalty area before curling the ball in from a tight angle.

Ozil scored the fourth goal of the match in the 21st minute when goalkeeper Ivan Kelava blocked a Higuain shot which rebounded kindly for the German who calmly slotted the ball home.

There was no rest for Zagreb as they had to retrieve the ball from the net four minutes into the second half when Raphael Varane played the ball over the Zagreb defence for Callejon to complete a rare brace.

Seven minutes later it was Benzema who completed his brace with a spectacular goal; the Frenchman played a quick one-two with Higuain before placing the ball in the far corner.

Dinamo Zagreb got their first goal in the 81st minute and it involved both of their on-form players; Luis Ibanez went on a great run on the left before playing an accurate cross for Beciraj to head home at the near post.

There was more to come for the visitors as they got their second goal nine minutes later when Madrid failed to clear the ball inside the penalty area; Milan Badelj eventually played the ball across for substitute Tomecak to bundle over the line.

Dinamo Zagreb remain at the bottom of the group without a point, but will have something positive to talk about after scoring their first goals in the group stage.
