Barcelona’s Lionel Messi celebrates his goal
Lionel Messi scored five goals as Barcelona demolished Bayer Leverkusen 7-1 in the second leg of their round of 16 UEFA Champions League tie at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night.

Substitute Cristian Tello scored the other two goals while Karim Bellarabi, also coming off the bench, scored the only goal for the German side.

Barcelona took control of the match from the first whistle and almost broke the deadlock in the 9th minute when Messi broke through on the right.

The Argentine fired his shot on target, only to be denied by a great save from Bernd Leno, while Cesc Fabregas’ follow up effort was blocked on the line by Gonzalo Castro.

Then in the 24th minute Gerard Pique met a freekick from Xavi with a glancing header, but Leno produced another superb save to parry the ball to safety.

However, the Catalans eventually got their opening goal two minutes later when Messi beat the offside trap before chipping the ball over the advancing goalkeeper.

Messi then scored his second goal of the match three minutes before the break when he received a pass from Andres iniesta and dribbled past Leverkusen defenders before firing a low show into the bottom left corner.

Leno then pulled off a double save two minutes later to deny Fabregas and Pedro in quick succession, and keeping the score respectable at the break.

Two minutes after the break a quick move involving Iniesta and Messi saw Fabregas through on goal but he tried to cross the ball back to Iniesta instead of shooting, allowing the visitors to clear the danger.

Fabregas made up for that poor decision two minutes later when he threaded the ball through for Messi  to finish with another delightful chip to grab his hat-trick.

The visitors came close to pulling a goal back in the 54th minute when Eren Derdiyok used his strength to get past Alves before chipping the ball over Victor Valdes, but his attempt bounced right across the goalmouth.

Substitute Tello spent just under two minutes on the park before getting his name on the scoresheet as he received a pass from Fabregas on the left and showed composure as he picked his spot at the far post.

Barcelona added another goal three minutes later when Leno spilled the ball inside the box but Messi showed his brilliance yet again as he finished from the tightest of angles.

Then Tello completed his brace in the 62nd minute when he received a cross from Dani Alves before firing home from inside the box.

Messi then netted his fifth goal of the match in the 84th minute when he collected a pass from Seydou Keita just outside the penalty area before curling a left-footed shot inside the left post.

Substitute Karim Bellarabi then scored a late consolation goal for the visitors in injury time, but it was a brilliant goal as he received a pass from Simon Rolfes on the left corner of the box before curling the ball towards the far post with his right foot.

It finished 7-1 on the night and Barcelona 10-2 on aggregate as Pep Guardiola’s men continued on their quest to defend the trophy they won last season.
