Stocker shocks Bayern with late goal
Basel's Alexander Frei celebrates with teammate Jacques Zoua
The match started off at a good pace with Bayern putting the early pressure on Basel's right with Franck Ribéry.The Frenchman’s lofted through ball found Mario Gomez, who skipped past the goalkeeper Yann Sommer but is forced too wide to make anything of the chance.
On the 13th minute Yann Sommer produced another fantastic save, with a strong right hand pawing away Ribéry's powerful near post strike, while Manuel Neuer was tested shortly after.
Aleksandar Dragović found himself unmarked from a deep free-kick, but the shot-stopper palmed his header against the post and the bouncing ball is cleared off the line.
Park Joo Ho found Alexander Frei, to thunder the ball against the crossbar from 15 yards with Bayern’s backman completely beaten.
Before the 40 minute mark Mario Gomez snatched at a headed chance, but he failed to get enough on the cross to divert it inside the far post.
After the restart the hosts had a corner as Holger Badstuber cut across Fabian Frei intelligently and clears the ball away from his opponent for a corner, but Basel fail to make it count.
Just after the hour mark Arjen Robben earned a free-kick on the very edge of the penalty area but nothing came from the goalscoring opportunity.
Thomas Müller then entered the fray as he replaced Ribery but was then soon booked after stepping onto the field.
As the match neared its end it almost seemed as if Basel were content to sit back and rely on their solid defence to get them through the remainder of the match, but that wasn’t to be the case as they sprung in a late goal.
Valentin Stocker is found at the back post by Jacques Zoua’s, as he fired low beyond Neuer for a dramatic goal to seal the 86th minute win.
