CSKA beat Inter to earn second place

CSKA Moscow stole a late win at the San Siro through Vasili Berezutski after an Estabian Cambiasso cancelled out Seydou Doumbia’s goal, to see the Russians finish second in the group.

With Inter having already qualified as group leaders for the match, CSKA needed a win and a draw in the match between Lille and Trabzonspur to see themselves finish second of Group B.

With Inter having nothing to play for the Russians came out with guns blazing which saw Walter Samuel needing to make a crucial sliding tackle in the box, seconds before Doumbia was about to let rip.

On the other end, Diego Milito laid on a cross for Philippe Coutinho, forcing the Moscow ‘keeper to come off his line and make the interception.

Vagner Love unleashed an effort that saw him sting the palms of Luca Castelazzi. The save saw the shot-stopper jumped off his line to smother a ball at the Brazilian’s feet.

Yuto Nagatomo unleashed a left-footed snapshot forcing Vladimi Gabulov to fling himself across the face of goal to make the save.

Minutes before the half, Coutinho slipped a through ball to Milito, who skipped the offside trap, and unleashed an effort resulting in a corner. The resulting corner only threatened by landing on the roof of the net.

After the restart Claudio Ranieri made a double change in which he introduced Mauro Zarate and Luca Caldirola.

But it was the away team that would take the lead as Doumbia had an exchange and a return ball with Vagner Love to see the African spring the offside trap and net the opener.

But the lead wasn’t to remain long as Cambiasso had an easy tap-in form an initial palmed away effort from an Andrea Ranocchia header.

Castellazzi plucked an Aleksei Berezutski volley out of the air, while Milito struck a header that hit the inside of the cross-bar but it don’t cross the line.

It was a costly miss by the Argentine as Berezutski put CSKA Moscow in front for the second time, just minutes before the 90.

Set-piece defending was in a sorry state for the Nerazzurri as a corner flung in saw the Russian player left totally unmarked in the box, to see him score with ease.

Nagatomo’s stoppage time effort wasn’t enough to pull out a late draw which saw Inter remain top and CSKA earn a well deserved second spot and qualification into the round of the last 16.
