Manchester United missed out on the last-16 of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in six seasons after losing 2-1 to Basel at St. Jakob-Park.

Alexander Frei and Marco Streller scored the two goals for Basel, while Phil Jones got a consolation goal for United.

United’s chances of progressing into the knockout stages looked to be threatened early in the first half when  Basel  captain, Streller volleyed home after De Gea’s save fell his way to put Basel ahead in the 9th minute.

United were guilty of squandering a number of goal scoring opportunities.

Nani proved to be a thorn for the Basel defence as his sublime skill and pace were the positive of United’s first half.

Rooney squandered a great opportunity in the 38th minute when he was played through by Nani, but his tame effort was well saved.

Basel led 1-0 at half-time.

In the second half, United enjoyed a huge portion of the ball possession but goals were nowhere to be seen.

Sir Alex Ferguson took out the inactive Ashley young and brought on Danny Welbeck but Basel’s defence remained stubborn.

Rooney went close with a curler in the 64th minute but it went inches wide.

United’s hopes of progressing were dealt a devastating blow in the closing stages when Frei converted Shaqiri's cross, although the visitors did manage to pull one back from Jones' header.

How are the mighty fallen ! Man U fans should accept this in good faith and should not look for officials to blame.
