Another Champions League disappointment for City
Manchester City's Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero stand dejected
Hulian Schieber scored the only goal of the match in the second half.
The first effort on goal came from Oliver Kirch for Dortmund eleven minutes into the match. His left-footed effort from just outside the area was palmed over the bar by the alert City shot-stopper Joe Hart.
In the 34th minute City produced their best move of the first quarter of the game and came close to grabbing the opening goal.
Samir Nasri was released on the left flank after 20 or so passes from the visitors. The Frenchman squared the ball for Dzeko in the area, but Schmelzer was there just in time to clear for a corner.
Ten minutes later, Edin Dzeko hit a dipping shot from about 20-yards out to force Dortmund keeper Roman Weidenfeller into a good save low to his right-hand post.
Sinclair sent in a useful-looking cross from the resulting corner but Dortmund survived the danger.
Immediately on the other end two minutes later Marco Reus shaved the outside of Hart's near post with a venomous drive from just inside the box. The German only just missed the target after he cut in from the right flank to create space for a left-footed drive.
Two minutes into the second half there was a great opportunity for Dzeko to catch Dortmund napping after the break. The Bosnian rose to meet Samir Nasri's cross but headed straight at Weidenfeller from only a few yards out.
Then in the 50th minute Dortmund were inches away from taking the lead as Mats Hummels came a whisker away from turning in Marcel Schmelzer's free-kick at the far post.
The hosts took the lead in the 57th minute through Schieber who opened the scoring with a tap-in from close range.
Second half substitute Jakub Blaszczykowski deserved a lot of credit for delivering a delicious low cross which left the German striker with very little to do.
With 14 minutes remaining in the match, Moritz Leitner had a golden chance to double Dortmund's lead but side-footed his effort wide of the near post, after a brilliant cut-back from the impressive Blaszczykowski.
The loss means City have been relegated from all European competitions this season whilst Dortmund who entered the match secured of finishing at the summit of the group standings will proceed to the Champions League knockout stages in the New Year.
