Bayern Munich's Mario Gomez (hidden left) is congratulated by his team mates after scoring
Mario Gomez scored a minute from time to hand Bayern Munich a 2-1 home win over Real Madrid in their first leg semi-final in the UEFA Champions League clash on Wednesday night. Mesut Ozil had pulled one back for the Spaniards in the second half after Frank Ribery’s early goal had given the Bavarians the lead.

In the seventh minute, first chance of the game fell to Madrid striker Karim Benzema. Sami Khedira intercepted a pass from Bastian Schweinsteiger on the halfway line. He gave the ball to Ozil, who in two touches, played the ball beautifully through to Benzema. The Frenchman took a touch, and hit from the edge of the area only to see his shot tipped over by Neuer.

In the 17th minute Bayern took the lead.  A corner from the left-hand side wasn't cleared by Madrid, and Ribery pounced on the loose ball from 12 yards out to smash it under Madrid keeper Casillas and make it 1-0 to the home team.

In the 26th minute, Luis Gustavo teed up Schweinsteiger whose 25-yards shot and unfortunately though he didn't quite catch it right. The shot went wide of Casillas' right-hand post.

The match went to half time with the Bavarians leading by the odd goal.

During the half time break Madrid coach Jose Mourinho must have had an earful to say to his charges as they returned a more determined side.

Eight minutes into the second half Madrid were level. Benzema had the ball initially on the edge of the Bayern area, and played in Ronaldo on the left-hand side. It looked for the entire world as if the former FIFA World Player of the Year winner would equalise but Neuer saved. The keeper pushed it only as far as Benzema though, who crossed the ball back across the box for Ronaldo again. This time, the Portuguese forward tapped it back towards Ozil, and the German international scored from a yard out.

In the 73rd minute Lahm bombed down the right-hand side and put in a great cross towards the head of their top scorer. He got up well, and from 12 yards out, headed just over the bar.

But with a minute left to play, Bayern scored the decisive goal. Persistently Lahm came forward and beat Coentrao to the byline, where he put in a brilliant low ball across the box. It was too quick for Casillas and Gomez was there in the middle of the goal to tap in from a yard out to make it 2-1 to the German giants.

Bayern take a decent but slim lead to Spain where the both sides will contest the second leg.
