Football commentator and close friend to Douglas Maicon, Bruno Longhi, believes he was sold to Manchester City because of his drinking problem.

The Brazilian’s form had taken a dive in the last two years and he opted to leave Inter in order to rekindle his partnership with Roberto Mancini at Manchester City.

Inside the studios of StudioSport, Longhi revealed the reason behind certain words he chose when commentating on Inter and Maicon, with the words tutta birra (full beer) used as a pun for his lifestyle but could be translated into ‘full speed’.

“Often in the commentary it was said that he was going at ‘full speed’,” revealed Longhi.

“Indeed in a restaurant in Milano, he showed me how much his bill can come to in one night. The Brazilian finished 90 beers.

“At one point, Inter was split with those who wanted to keep him, even with the concern that he may into error, and those who wanted to get rid of him. At the end the latter won.

“I wish that Mancini can turn him back to being the person he was and that he only goes ‘full speed’ on the field.”
