Nigeria’s Obiora Nwankwo has extended his stay at Italian club
Inter Milan by two years but will be loaned out to lower league side Padova.
The contract extension was formalised Thursday in Milan soon on arrival from international duty with Nigeria and will see the defensive midfielder stay at Inter till June 30, 2015.
This is now expected to cool off interests from clubs in Italy, Germany and France for the promising player, whose main assets are his vision and long passes.
The former U20 star joined Inter in 2009, but has yet to establish himself in the first-team squad and so he has been loaned out to Parma and then AS Gubbio 1910.
At Padova, who last featured in the Italian top flight in 1996 and now are in Serie B, Nwankwo will reunite with his coach at the Inter youth team, Fulvio Pea.
The 45-year-old Pea came close to winning a historic promotion to Serie A for Sassuolo before he teamed up with Padova earlier this month.
The 20-year-old midfielder has made six appearances in the Italian Serie A and three in the UEFA Champions League with Inter and Parma.
In the second half of last season, Nwankwo featured in 18 matches and scored twice for Gubbio in the Italian Serie B.
He played all three of Nigeria’s qualifiers this month, against Namibia, Malawi and Rwanda.
