Parma pause Inter’s Europe hopes
Wesley Sneijder, Inter Milan
Parma stretched their winning run to five games as they fought back from a Wesley Sneijder goal to defeat Inter 3-1 at the Ennio Tardini, stalling Inter’s hopes of a spot in the Champions League.
Inter welcomed back Julio Cesar in goal as Parma got the game underway with both teams set out to fight for a European berth.
The Nerazzurri got their hopes of a Champions League spot on the right track, in the 13th minute, when Dejan Stankovic crossed a low ball into the box, which bobbled around before Sneijder tapped it in.
The 20th minute saw the Nigerian Joel Obi booked for foul play, while Stankovic nearly made a costly error as he gave away the ball to Cicero Johnathan but Yuto Nagatomo saved his blushes just before the half hour.
Marques was booked for Parma in the 33rd minute and the same sanction was handed to Douglas Maicon in the first minute of extra time.
Andrea Stramaccioni opted to make his first substitution at the break as Marco Faraoni took to the field in place of Nagatomo.
Roberto Donadoni couldn’t have dreamt of a better start to the second half. Sebastian Giovinco sliced in a precise cross in to the box, which left Marques wide open and allowing for an easy tap-in in the 54th minute, bring the teams level.
But the scores weren’t on par for a long time as two minutes later the pint-sized striker exposed the napping Inter defence and made a run at goal down the field, making an easy slot past Julio Cesar.
Inter underwent a change of formation as they moved to a 4-2-3-1 by bringing in Mauro Zarate in place of the off-form Stankovic.
Fifteen minutes from time Diego Milito slotted a ball into the box but the substitute Giampaolo Pazzini wasted the shot.
Inter’ defence was leaking more than a colander as Johnathan Biabiany latched onto a long ball just above the half way line, ran up the field, round Julio Cesar, turned in the box and slotted it past Julio Cesar in the 83rd minute.
