Muntari sends Milan back on top
Sulley Muntari, Ac Milan
A tension filled Milan managed to reclaim
top spot, for at least 24 hours, with a narrow 1-0 win over Chievo as a Sulley
Muntari thunderous strike was enough to leave Juventus having to win on
Wednesday.
The hosts made the first threatening attack of the game in the fifth minute as he got the better of Alessandro Nesta, to pass to Paolo Sammarco who saw his cross tapped away by Mario Yepes.
But it was Milan who grabbed the early lead, two minutes later, as Sulley Muntari gathered the ball by the centre circle, to make a run and fire a low range unstoppable shot, leaving Stefano Sorrentino helpless.
The 21st minute saw Sammarco added to the referees book following a sliding tackle on Gianluca Zambrotta, while two minutes later the Milan youth product of Alberto Paloschi thought he found the equalizer. Paloschi grabbed onto a pass to tuck it around Christian Abbiati at the near post, however the goal was disallowed due to an offside.
Just two minutes before the half hour, Antonio Nocerino almost had a chance to double the lead when he latched onto a long ball by the debutant Mattia De Sceglio, but the former Palermo player’s touch was too heavy as it rolled into Sorrentino’s arms.
Thirty-five minutes in Robinho was showcasing some Brazilian samba skills as the Chievo backline failed to handle his stopovers before seeing his shot from an acute angle go wide of Sorrentino’s goal.
The Rossoneri sloppily gave away the ball away, in the stoppages of the first half; allowing for Marco Rigoni to take a shot from outside the box but it whiskered just wide of goal.
Four minutes into the restart Sergio Pellisier fired in a low shot inside the box but Abbiati performed a magical save, while the follow up went high of goal.
Muntari was shown yellow for a foul on Pellisier in the 51st minute and risked a second yellow for persistent arguing, before Gennaro Gattuso was replaced by Stephan El Shaarawy just after the hour mark.
Seventy-three minutes in Pellisier unleashed a shot at goal but Abbiati easily scooped it up, while on the other end Milan worked a counter-attack which see Zlatan Ibrahimovic curl his ball towards goal but it went just wide.
The home side saw penalty appeals waved as Pellisier was booked for his continue protests in the 78th, before a second penalty was waved away once more following a Nesta hand ball in the box but play was halted for an offside. That episode coming in the 80th minute.
In the last 30 seconds of the game Mario Yepes went down to ground with his nose heavily bleeding following an aerial intervention with Cyril Thereau.
