Bologna’s miracle defeat Inter
Bologna's goal scorer Alberto Gilardino
Ironically it was the former Milan player, Alberto Gilardino, who separated the two teams as his 64th minute goal gave his side the three points, while Inter were left bitterly disappointed with their outing.
Inter marked the occasion by celebrating their 150th birthday since their inauguration and it was made doubly special as their long serving captain, Javier Zanetti, ticked off 600 Serie A appearances with the Nerazzurri.
The game kicked off and immediately a chance fell straight away to Bologna, when Alessandro Diamanti’s set-piece worked its way into the box to meet Mikael Antonsson who threatened with a header in the first minute of play.
It was a frantic opening 15 minutes for Inter, whose defense was caught in sixes and sevens, and they were once again put under threat with a half-volleyed effort by Alberto Gilardino which was spewed narrowly wide.
Inter only started to turn the play in favour of them a half an hour into the game, but their efforts proved fruitless when Freddy Guarin’s ball into the box failed to meet Ezequiel Schelotto.
Dejan Stankovic was then shown yellow for a strong challenge on Diamanti as they played out to a goalless first half.
Andrea Stramaccioni opted for change at the start of the second period and he took off Massimiliano Benassi for Antonio Cassano.
The change still wasn’t enough to prevent Bologna’s rampage and they grabbed the lead through Gilardino. The striker player broke the offside trap and volleyed Diamanti’s looping ball into the back of the net in the 64th minute.
Midway through the second 45, Inter finally threatened through a Cassano effort which was forced out for a corner by Gianluca Curci.
Gaurin then supplied a great ball towards Esteban Cambiassio at the far post, and it was frantically dealt with by the visitors with Rene Krhin chesting it out for a corner.
Still Inter’s efforts in front of goal were something which little to be desired about as they couldn’t find the late equalizer they so desperately needed, seeing them lose 1-0 to Bologna.
