Duel at the top
Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris
The Parisians may be shining in
the championship, as they did during their victory 3-0 on Montpellier’s pitch
in their last encounter, but they stumbled on Thursday evening in their
European clash against Athletic Bilbao, 2-0, thereby putting an end to their
series of ten matches with no losses across all their competitions.
With Ménez and Gameiro being
rested and Matuidi on the bench, Antoine Kombouaré’s men were dominated by a
much more entrepreneurial Basque team and even ended at ten after the expulsion
of Sissoko at the start of the second half.
The return of some of their key players
should change the status quo against Lyon, who will certainly find themselves
face to face with a very different Parisian team to the one that challenged
Bilbao.
The Lyonnais are enjoying huge
success themselves, both on the national (3-1 win against Bordeaux) as well as
European (2-0 victory against Dinamo Zagreb) scene.
The extended absence of several
key players in the Gones’ cloakroom was perfectly compensated for by an
impeccable formation lead by Hugo Lloris, Kim Kallstrom, Michel Bastos and Bafé
Gomis.
Yoann Gourcuff and Clément
Grenier will be excluded from the trip to Paris, but Lisandro, Cris and Ederson
have taken up training again and their presence in the group is not totally out
of the question.
This is a real ''six points''
match between the leader and the runner-up and a victory for either one could
be important in the race for the title.
