Real Madrid assistant coach Aitor Karanka has praised defender Rafael Varane for his performance during the 1-1 draw against Barcelona in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal.

The 19-year-old was solid in defence and capped off his brilliant showing by scoring the equalising goal in the 81st minute, canceling Cesc Fabregas’ 50th minute opener.

“Playing as a centre back you cannot do it better,” said Karanka.

“He's 19 years old and the game he had - saving a goal, playing perfect, scoring the goal for the draw - he couldn't have played better.

"He is trying to improve, his head is in the right place, and he dealt well with this game.

“Also, for the rest of the team everybody played very well, also the players that didn’t play in their normal position, so we are very happy with the work rate of the team."
