Baba scores brace as Sevilla down Rayo
Defender Cala, Jose Antonio Reyes and Frederic Kanoute scored the other goals, while Diego Costa replied with a brace for the visitors.
The hosts opened the scoring in the 31st minute from a brilliant counter-attack which saw winger Jesus Navas carrying the ball from his half before feeding Baba to fire past David Cobeno.
However, Sevilla’s joy was short-lived as the visitors levelled matters six minutes later with Diego Costa converting from the penalty spot after Federico Fazio had fouled Michu inside the box.
Sevilla then restored their lead two minutes before the break when defender Cala connected with a cross from Ivan Rakitic before beating Cobeno with a powerful header.
Baba completed brace two minutes into the second half as he connected with a pinpoint cross from Navas to nod the ball into the back of the net.
Substitute Jose Antonio Reyes the extended the advantage in the 66th minute with another finish from inside the box before Diego Costa pulled one back for the visitors 11 minutes later.
The loudest cheer of the night came in the 82nd minute when club legend Kanoute finished from close range to score what is likely to be his last goal at the Pizjuan as he is set to leave the club at the end of the season.
The Malian replaced Rakitic in the 66th minute after overcoming a hamstring injury which threatened to keep him on the sidelines for the rest of the season.
