The 28-year-old joined the Catalans from Liverpool for a reported in 2010 and has played 97 official games for the club.

He has won six titles with the club, including the Champions League, Primera Division and Copa del Rey.

The Argentine joined the club as a defensive midfielder but under Pep Guardiola he played most of his games as a central defender, making him an important asset to the club.

"Mascherano has become a key player for us," his Barcelona teammate and compatriot Lionel Messi told the club’s website.

"Since Guardiola played him in central defence, I don't think he has had a bad game."

Mascherano started his career in his native country with River Plate and the Corinthians, and also played for English side West Ham United before joining Liverpool.
