Malaga midfielder Enzo Maresca says qualifying for the Champions League group stage is their main priority at the moment.

The Anchovies finished in fourth place in La Liga last season to earn themselves a spot in the play-off stage of the competition.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men are currently hard at work as they prepare for the new season which will begin with a La Liga match against newly-promoted side Celta Vigo.

“It’s going to be a long, hard season.  This is what the pre-season stage is for, to work hard, perform well, and to ensure our batteries are fully charged for the season ahead,” Maresca told the club’s website.

“We’re not all as precise in our game play as we need to be yet, but it’s normal to be very tired during the first few days of the pre-season.

“Also quality players like Isco and (Santi) Cazorla aren’t with us here at the moment.”

The draw for the play-off stage will be conducted after the preliminary round on August 10, but the former Sevilla player admitted that they are already thinking about that crucial tie.

“Our main aim right now is winning the Champions League play-off,” he said.

“I think winning that game and qualifying for Champions League will be like getting a hole in one in golf.”
