Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara will not represent Spain at the 2012 Olympic Games after failing a fitness test.

The 21-year-old was included in Luis Milla’s preliminary squad pending a medical examination, but tests have confirmed that he will not regain his fitness in time for the tournament.

Barcelona confirmed through a statement on their website which read:

“Tests were conducted today to access the state of Thiago Alcantara's tibia injury.

“The results confirm that the injury has not been overcome and that the player will have to continue his recovery process over the coming weeks, therefore he will not receive the medical all-clear before the Olympics in London.”

The provisional squad is now down to 21 players and will be reduced to 18 before the tournament.

Spain has been drawn in Group B with Japan, Morocco and Honduras.
