Real Madrid midfielder Michael Essien returned to training on Thursday after being sidelined by injury.

The Ghanaian player rejoined the rest of the squad as they prepared for Saturday's away game against newly-promoted side Real Valladolid.

Fabio Coentrao, who picked up a knock during Wednesday night's Champions League clash against Ajax Amsterdam, was also present at training, but he only did some light jogging.

The Portuguese left-back is unlikely to be fit for Saturday's trip to the Jose Zorrilla Stadium, meaning that Jose Mourinho will have to look at other options for that position with Marcelo still out with a foot injury.

Ricardo Carvalho, who has spent most of the season with the reserve side, returned to first team action against Ajax, and was also part of the preparations for Saturday's clash.
