Sevilla conceded a late equaliser as their La Liga match against Espanyol ended in a 1-1 draw at the Cornella-El Prat Stadium on Sunday night.

Alvaro Negredo put the Sevillistas ahead on the stroke time, but they were unable to hold on to the lead as Phillipe Coutinho levelled matters late in the second half.

Sevilla played their normal game which relies on passing and wing-play, while the home side looked to pounce on the counter-attack.

Speedy forward Alvaro Vazquez causing most of the problems for the defence and he almost put his side ahead in the 21st minute but Coke was able to clear the ball at the far post.

Then moments later Sevilla threatened at the other end when Jesus Navas picked out Negredo inside the box, but his header was well-saved by Cristian Alvarez.

Just when it seemed that the two sides would go into the break with the deadlock intact, Negredo took advantage of the loss of concentration in added time when he received a pass from Ivan Rakitic before firing past Alvarez.

Despite trailing by a goal, Espanyol didn’t change their tactics in the second half as they continued to allow Sevilla to play, while they relied on quick breaks.

Neither side had anything to cheer about until Frederic Kanoute received loud applause in the 73rd minute when he came off the bench to play his final game for Sevilla.

However, three minutes later the home fans were off their feet as on-loan Brazilian midfielder Phillipe Coutinho beat Coke before finding the back of the net to level the scores.

This results sees Sevilla ending their La Liga campaign in ninth place with 50 points, while Espanyol will also be disappointed with finishing in 14th place with five points less.
