England's Wayne Rooney calms his team-mates after scoring
Danny Welbeck and Andy Caroll led the England attack in his absence, but the return of talisman Rooney proved vital for the English.
Not only was he a hive of activity, but he got the vital goal that gave his country victory. In the 48th minute Steven Gerrard swung in a great cross in after a semicleared corner from the England right, Andriy Pyatov fumbled his save and the England striker was waiting at the back post to nod in from one yard.
The simplest of goals Rooney will ever score and his first in a major tournament since Euro 2004. His presence up front was the difference between victory and defeat for England. He had four shot at goal, two of which were on target in this match.
