Newcastle United celebrated the sides first successful French Day at St. James park on the weekend with a win over Southampton.

Newcastle United fans were invited to dress up in French inspired clothing over the past weekend as the side celebrated its first ever French day.

‘Le Toon’ signed five French players during the January transfer window adding to the five that already plied their trade at the Tyneside club.

French right back Mathieu Debuchy, who joined Newcastle in January this year, admitted that French day helped to inspire Newcastle’s French stars as they played a pivotal role in the sides 4-2 victory over Southampton on Sunday.

"It was a good initiative taken by the Club to do that and we came away with a victory at the end of the day, which was fantastic,” Debuchy told his club website.

The Newcastle faithful were treated to Gallic entertainment at half time and sing along before kick off as the side tried to make their French contingent feel at home.

Newcastle United currently have ten registered French players at the club, the players include: Yohan Cabaye, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Moussa Sissoko, Hatem Ben Arfa, Yoan Gouuffran, Romain Amalfitano, Massadio Haïdara, Mathieu Debuchy, Gabriel Obertan and Sylvain Marveaux.
