Chelsea have asked the police to take “the strongest possible action” against those who racially abused Nigeria star Mikel Obi on Twitter.

Mikel removed his Twitter profile from the social networking site less than 24 hours after his mistake cost Chelsea victory in the opening match of their Champions League defence against Juventus.

The 25-year-old Nigeria international, who apologised for the error, immediately after the game deleted the 'Mikel12Official' account he had set up during the team's pre-season tour of the US.

In a statement published on their website, the London club stated, "We've been made aware of racist tweets targeted at Mikel which are totally unacceptable, disgusting and abhorrent.

"We've informed the police and support taking the strongest possible action."

Mikel is expected to be in the thick of action again when Chelsea take on Stock City Saturday in an English Premier League game.
