Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi has now set his sights on winning
this year’s FIFA Club World Cup with his English club.
Mikel was a key figure as Chelsea won UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history and he is already thinking of adding another feather to his cap.
This year’s Club World Cup will be staged by Japan between December 6 and 16 and besides Chelsea, Monterrey of Mexico and Auckland City have qualified for the annual competition.
"I am happy to have recorded great achievements with my team and now I am looking forward to winning the 2012 FIFA Club World Cup so as to make history again,” he told MTNFootball.com
“I was part of the history by winning Champions League and winning the Club World Cup will be the icing on the cake."
A winners’ medal at this year’s Club World Cup in Japan will mean Mikel will match the exploits of compatriots Nwankwo Kanu and Finidi George, who won the competition then known as the Intercontinental Cup in 1995 with Ajax Amsterdam.
Mikel’s personal trophy cabinet now includes this past season’s UEFA Champions League, English Premier League championship (2009/10), four FA Cups(2006/07, 2008/09, 2009/10, 2011/12), League Cup (2006/07), FA Community Shield (2009).
He won a runners-up medal at the 2005 FIFA U20 World Cup and was picked as second best player of the tournament behind Lionel Messi.
The former Plateau United star has also twice been voted Africa’s best young player and Chelsea young player.
