Chelsea wrong route for Victor Moses

Victor Moses - First-team football or the cash and glamour offered by Chelsea? 'Greed behind Chelsea move'

An initial four million pounds bid by European champions Chelsea for Victor Moses was widely celebrated in Nigeria, but it may well not be the way for the Eagles winger to go.

Will this massive jump in class, from little Wigan to a top team like Chelsea, break or make Victor Moses?

Wigan certainly do not think so, but the player’s agent has argued that Moses deserves his big break at the top.

Moses promises so much and it was therefore not surprising that Wigan manager Roberto Martinez would be first to say he would pay to watch the former Crystal Palace winger play.

He was one of the sparks who ensured that Wigan stayed up in the English Premier League for the second straight season against most expectations.

He played all 38 EPL matches last season, scoring against all the big teams save Chelsea, where he had his goal disallowed, as Wigan again defied the odds.

Little wonder therefore that other clubs like Liverpool, QPR, Sunderland are also lining up for him.

A move to Stamford Bridge would most certainly enhance his profile and give him an opportunity to begin to win trophies as well as play at the highest level.

You can also not overlook the fact that his 10,000 pounds-a-week wage at Wigan will be peanuts compared to what Chelsea will shell out.

His agent Tony Finnigan has been pushing for this move, but we also know very well that the player would have been lost to England had the agent got his way.

But in football terms, he looks likely to struggle to make the first team and enjoy regular playing time as he has done at Wigan, playing week in, week out.

With the acquisition of Belgium international star Eden Hazard and Marko Marin, Chelsea are not short of options upfront. These players will most certainly limit the young Nigeria’s first-team chances and invariably his development.

Even without the new signings, the likes of Florent Malouda and Daniel Sturridge could all play out wide and are most likely to be higher on the pecking order of manager Roberto Di Matteo than Moses.

A player like Romelu Lukaku was hailed on arrival at Stamford Bridge. But at only 19 years, ‘The new Drogba’ is now fighting to save his burgeoning career after he saw very little action this past season for ‘The Blues’.

Victor Moses could also take a tip from Charles N’zogbia, who was a big hit at Wigan but whose ratings have plunged after a celebrated nine million pounds move to Aston Villa, where he managed only two goals in 30 appearances last season.

Chelsea would be a bridge too far for Moses, who has yet to establish himself with the Super Eagles even after a handful of caps.

Even his international career would suffer when he will not be playing regularly for Chelsea.

A move to one of the middle-of-the table teams like Fulham and Sunderland would be a much better option for him at this point of his football development, before he then takes his chance with any of the big teams.

This way he would become the finished article and so worth every penny the big guns will splash on him.
