Senegal skipper Papiss Cisse has apologised to fans for failing to convert a penalty during his side’s 3-1 World Cup qualifying win over Liberia on Saturday.

The 26-year-old Newcastle forward also pleaded for supporters to be patient with the Teranga Lions, who were knocked out of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations in the group stage and have been through three different coaches since then.

“Personally, if I had no conviction of scoring it I would not have gone to take the kick," Cisse told Cafonline.com.

"I missed it, but it happens in football. The most important thing is that we have won and have picked up the three points.

“I would like to say sorry for that and also call on our fans to be patient with the team, which has seen much instability recently."

Senegal currently top Group J on three points and will meet Uganda in Kampala on June 9th.
