Manchester United are ready to make a £10 million bid for Everton’s Leighton Baines.

United could move within the week or once chief executive David Gill returns from holiday in America.

Everton value Baines at more than £15 million, but according to The Times, United are unlikely to be willing to do business at that price.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson is confident of securing a deal for the 27-year-old, who has three years still to run on his contract at Goodison Park.

Patrice Evra’s form dipped last season and Fabio Da Silva joining Queens Park Rangers on a season-long loan deal and Ezekiel Fryers is expected to sign for Tottenham Hotspur, Ferguson requires cover at left back.

Baines’s arrival would represent a shift in transfer policy for Ferguson. Dimitar Berbatov, the striker, is the only player aged over 26 that Ferguson has signed for a fee in the past 15 years.
