Harry Redknapp has stated that he lied to a journalist when quizzed about several payments into a Monaco bank account, he revealed in court yesterday.

The Tottenham Hotspur manager revealed he lied to a reporter that he had received a bonus to stop him publishing an unfavourable story on the day of a cup final against Manchester United.

The tactician then noted that the payments he received were part of an investment fund created by former Portsmouth manager, Milan Mandaric, which tallied up to the amount of £189,000.

Stories started to contradict each other when a taped interview with sports writer, Rob Beasley, heard Redknapp say that the money was a bonus for the sale of Peter Crouch.

It is alleged that Redknapp and Mandaric evaded tax on the payments which were directly linked to his job as manager of Portsmouth.

John Black, QC, prosecutor, was told by Redknapp: “Milan has paid £100million in income tax. I have paid £8million. Are we going to say, let’s see if we can avoid £25,000 or £30,000 income tax?

“It’s unbelievable that I am even standing here. Milan was struggling at the time. He was down to his last billion.”

“You have told a pack of lies. You have come to this court and twisted matters in order to get yourself and Mr Mandaric off the hook,” said Mr Black.

Redknapp replied: “You think I put my hand on the Bible and told lies? That’s an insult, Mr Black, that’s an insult. I put my hand on the Holy Bible and everything I tell you is the truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God.
