Roberto Mancini’s colleagues were said to be working around the clock in hope of luring the Dutchman to the Etihad, but their hopes were soon shattered when it became official that he had agreed to sign for Manchester United.
Van Persie is expected to undergo a medical at the Red Devil’s headquarters on Thursday, in a deal that is expected to set back United £24 million.
Italian giants Juventus were also said to be interested in acquiring the striker’s services, but they have since shifted focus onto Fernando Llorente.
