Mario Balotelli will be forced to miss out Italy’s friendly against England after he contracted an eye infection.

This year’s European runners-up will take on the Three Lions in a rerun of the quarterfinal clash of the European Championships on Wednesday, and the City striker will not be making the trip.

Due to the infection the 22-year-old missed the club’s Community Shield triumph over Chelsea on Sunday afternoon, but was expected to feature in Berne for Wednesday’s international.

The striker was an influential force in helping Cesare Prandelli’s Azzurri to reach the final, and was one of a handful of few of the Euro squad called-up, but will now be replaced by Udinese’s youngster Diego Fabbrini.

Balotelli will return to Manchester to recover from conjunctivitis ahead of Saturday's English Premier League curtain raiser with promoted Southampton.
