Papiss Cisse scored deep into stoppage time to hand Newcastle United a vital 2-1 win over a determined West Bromwich Albion side at St. James Park on Sunday afternoon in a Barclays Premier League match.

Demba Ba had given the Magpies the lead in the first half before Romelu Lukaku levelled early in the second half.

A huge chance went begging for Newcastle in the 12th minute, Hatem Ben Arfa picked out Shola Ameobi on the right-wing, the striker whipped in an inch-perfect ball for Ba but the Senegalese international's diving header went wide of the near-post.

In the 20th minute, there was more pressure from the home side, Cabaye's in-swinging free-kick was headed away but only as far as Davide Santon, whose rasping 30-yard effort was well saved by Ben Foster. Ameobi won a free-header from the resulting corner but West Brom keeper Ben Foster saved it comfortably.

Newcastle took the lead through Ba with ten minutes of the first half left to play. Route one stuff from the Magpies as Ameobi flicked a Krul goal-kick into the path of the Senegalese, who out-muscled Gareth McAuley before firing a superb half-volley past Foster.

By the end of the first half, the Magpies had enjoyed more of the play and had good value for their lead, however, West Brom were still very much in the contest and could have scored a few themselves if they had been more clinical in front of goal.

West Brom had been the much better team in the second period and they deservedly levelled, Gera lofted a ball into the back post and Lukaku finally got his goal, nodding past a stranded Krul to stun the home crowd.

Newcastle snatched it right at the death through Cisse. Ben Arfa broke through the middle before he laid the ball into Sammy Ameobi, the younger of the two brothers fired a long range effort which Cisse got a touch on to divert the ball past Foster.
