Manchester United defeated Sunderland 1-0 on the final day of the season, but it was not enough to win the Premier League.

A Wayne Rooney goal after 20 minutes handed the Red Devils a victory which looked set to hand them the title, but late goals in Manchester City’s 3-2 win at QPR saw the trophy snatched out of their hands.

United started strongly and handed early tests to goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, but only in the 20th minute did they surge ahead, as Rooney headed home from Phil Jones’ cross.

The striker also hit the crossbar from a free kick, as the visitors bossed the first half.

The second half saw the Black Cats dominate as nerves clearly affected the United players, though they did come close to adding to their lead when Rooney hit the post late on.

When the final whistle blew United thought they were champions, but a late, late Sergio Aguero goal for City handed them a win over QPR... and the league title on goal difference.
