Schalke 'keeper extends contract
Lewis Holtby Schalke and German International
The 22-year-old started last season as second-choice goalkeeper behind Ralf Fahrmann, but was allowed to claim his place in the first team after the former Eintracht Frankfurt man sustained a long-term injury.
He went on to establish himself as a dependable presence between the sticks as Schalke mounted a challenge for the Bundesliga title, only to finish third behind Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.
His previous contract was due to expire at the end of the coming season, but he has committed his future to the club for the next three campaigns, and will now compete with Fahrmann and Timo Hildebrand for a spot in Huub Stevens' first team.
Schalke are also in negotiations to extend the contracts of the likes of Atsuto Uchida, Lewis Holtby and, crucially, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who scored 48 goals last season, but has just one year left on his current deal.
