Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes has acknowledged that he must try harder for the club this season.

The 24-year-old wishes to remain captain of the Royal Blues, despite being plagued by a succession of injuries during the last Bundesliga campaign that limited him to just 22 league appearances.

After missing numerous games last season, Howedes has recognised that he must give a little more for the team in order to earn his place and the captain's armband.

In an interview with Bild, Howedes said: "I have to give another ten per cent.

"The coach (Huub Stevens) is right that I should give ten per cent more."

The Germany international has been linked with a move to Liverpool and Bayern Munich at various points throughout the summer, but looks set to stay in Gelsenkirchen, as they look to build on their third-placed finish in the Bundesliga last season.
