Schalke lose ground after Hamburg defeat
Maximilian Beister, Artjoms Rudnevs and Milan Badelj all netted for Hamburg SV as they defeated Schalke 3-1at the Imtech Arena on Tuesday night in a Bundesliga encounter. Klaas-jan Hunterlaar scored the only goal for the visitors.
As early as the third minute the home side had their first sight at goal when Dennis Aogo’s left footed shot from more than 35-yards was high and wide to the left. Hamburg were enjoying the early chances and four minutes later Aogo was at it again when he hit the right post with a left footed shot from the left side of the box.
Schalke had their first opportunity in the 14th minute of the match following a cross by Christian Fuchs which Klaas-Jan Huntelaar was at the receiving end of it; saw his right footed shot from the centre of the box miss to the right.
In the 23rd minute Jefferson Farfán supplied a cross into the box but Huntelaar’s header from the centre of the box was close, but missed the top right corner. Two minutes before the break, Roman Neustädter’s right footed shot from the right side of the box was saved in the bottom right corner by the Hamburg keeper.
Six minutes after the half time break, Hamburg’s Michael Mancienne right footed shot from more than 35-yards was saved in the bottom right corner by Schalke keeper Lars Unnerstall.
A minute later, Hamburg’s consistent persistence finally paid off. Maximilian Beister’s left footed shot from outside the box went into the top right corner of the net.
Hamburg sent their home fans into jubilation when they doubled their lead in the 65th minute, Artjoms Rudnevs’ right footed shot from the centre of the box went into the bottom left corner of goal.
Following a set piece situation 10 minutes from time Hunterlaar’s right footed shot from the centre of the box 12-yards saw the Schalke half the deficit.
In the 90th minute a penalty was conceded by Schalke’ Tranquillo Barnetta after a foul in the penalty area. Milan Badelj converted the penalty with a right footed shot to the bottom left corner of goal.
