2013 MTN/FAZ Super Division

League Overview

The 2013 MTN/FAZ Super Division season kicks-off on March 16 and will run well until mid-November, 2013.

Defending champions Zanaco will be targeting title number seven after dominating the league over the last 10 years winning six crowns.

Zanaco keep faith in coach Keagan Mumba who was hired at the start of 2012 on his way to picking up his first Super Division title as coach.

Zanaco are expected to face a strong challenge for the 2013 title from 2012 runners-up Power Dynamos whom they toppled last year.

The biggest test in the title race will be on Zesco United, winners in 2007, 2008 and 2010 following the departure of Wedson Nyirenda who led them to their first two victories but left mid-way through his second stint in January to take up another challenge in Mozambique.

Zesco are under the relatively inexperienced Tennant Chembo who was Nyirenda’s first assistant and has six months to prove he deserves to a long-term deal.
Focus too will fall on one of Zambia's most supported clubs Kabwe Warriors who return following their demotion in 2011.

Green Buffaloes who in February appointed respected ex-Zambia coach Patrick Phiri following the death of late trainer George Chikokola in January, 2013 will also come under the microscope after years of underachieving and without a league win since 1981.

Meanwhile, Zesco and Buffaloes are two of five clubs that have made coaching changes in the pre-season.

Others are promoted Kalulushi Modern Stars who return after a 12 year absence, Nkana and Konkola Mine Police who return for only their second season in the MTN/FAZ Super Division.

Power won the 1991 defunct CAF Cup Winners Cup, beating 1990 winners BCC Lions of Nigeria 5-4 on aggregate.

That feat came a year after Nkana finished runner-ups in the  African Club Champions Cup , the forerunner to the CAF Champions League when they lost to JSK of Algeria on a dramatic post-match penalties after a 1-1 aggregate score line.

Meanwhile, the winds of change have swept across the league landscape during the turn of the new century with Zanaco of Lusaka and Zesco United from Ndola dominating the last decade.

Zanaco have won five, while current champions Zesco have lifted three league titles.
