SA match officials get key games
South African match officials will
officiate in crucial 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month, including
Cameroon versus DR Congo.
Referee Daniel Bennett, together with assistants Enock Molefe and Zakhele
Siwela, have been tasked with this high-level match between the two Central
African giants. Lwandile Mfiki will be the fourth official.
The following week Bennett will be in Mali
to officiate in another 2014 World Cup qualifier where Mali will face Algeria.
The match will be played on Saturday, 9 June.
Sandile Dilikane and Lindikhaya Bolo will
be the assistants while Victor Gomes will sit in as the fourth official.
Meanwhile the Confederation of African
Football (CAF) has invited two of South Africa's elite female referees to
attend a high level women's referee course for members on the CAF panel of
referees and assistant referees.
Baaitse Maanca and Nomvula Masilela will be
amongst the highly-ranked female referees on the continent at the course that
will take place from June 18-23 at the CAF Football Academy in Yaoundé,
Cameroon.
The course is designed to keep referees on
the elite panel up to date with the trends of refereeing and will also include
aspects of refereeing such as physical training and fitness tests.
The course came up as a means of preparing
the referees for selection to officiate in the upcoming African Women's
Championship qualifiers set to begin towards the end of May.
"It’s good news that CAF has invited
some of our own to an elite referees’ course. I would like to congratulate the
selected participants and hope this serves as inspiration for upcoming female
referees. We also believe this will promote women’s involvement in the game as
we look to have higher participation amongst female referees in the country,”
said Alpha Mchunu, Chairman of the Referees Committee at SAFA.
“Their participation in the course will
assist in their development because they will be interacting with other
referees from the continent.”
