What happened between Igesund and Josephs
Moeneeb Josephs of Orlando Pirates
Igesund has made it clear though that Josephs will have to fight for his place just like any other player and that him returning was not doing anyone within the set-up any favours.
“I went to see Moeneeb yesterday, not to persuade him to continue playing international football but simply to listen to him and hear his reasons because I felt that the age of 30 years is too young for a goalkeeper to retire,” said Igesund, who coached Josephs while at Ajax Cape Town.
“I’m not in a position to tell you all his reasons for retiring; he’s better suited to do that, but I told him that he’s not doing us a favour by making himself eligible for selection.
“He still has to come back and compete like every other player in the squad; this does not make him an automatic selection.
“We’re happy to have him back in contention but the goalkeeping department is quite strong with the likes of Itumeleng Khune, Wayne Sandilands and other good goalkeepers.
“But we’re happy because he’s very patriotic, which is why I was surprised when he retired. But I understand that he had some personal issues and felt that he had nobody to turn to at the time.”
