SuperSport United will have to prepare for the first official game of the season, their MTN8 quarterfinal match against Free State Stars, without their number one goalkeeper coach.

The Matsatsantsa have given goalkeeper coach William Shongwe time off to recover from injury.

The former Kaizer Chiefs and Swazi national team goalkeeper is suffering with a recurring back injury which has been troubling him for some time.

The Tshwane-based side has given him three weeks to recover, following the doctor’s orders that he should take some time off.

Shongwe has done a remarkable job with the club’s goalkeepers over the past few seasons and his efforts have not gone unnoticed, having developed the likes of current number one keeper, Ronwen Williams.

That leaves Gavin Hunt’s side without their goalkeeper coach for the start of the season, but with the experienced Rowen Fernandez in the squad, the former Bafana international is sure to provide a clam head and lead the way for SuperSport’s number one shot stopper Williams.

The former South African international, Fernandez, has in fact been tasked to train the club’s keepers on an interim basis, while Shongwe is away.
